What is the copyright registration process?

Copyright protection is automatic upon the creation of an original work of authorship and its fixation in a tangible medium of expression, and there is no requirement for formal registration. However, registering your copyright can offer additional legal benefits, including the ability to file infringement lawsuits and collect statutory damages.

Generally, the process of copyright registration may include the following steps:

  • Preparation: Identify the work to be copyrighted and ensure it is original and fixed in a tangible form.

  • Application: Complete the copyright application form on the National Copyright Office website (https://eservice.eco.loc.gov/).

  • Submission: Submit the application along with the required fee and a copy of the work to the copyright office.

  • Review: The copyright office reviews the application to ensure compliance with legal requirements.

  • Certification: Once approved, a certificate of registration is issued, providing a public copyright record.
